India being such a multicultural and diverse nation, exploring its every corner is definitely what fancies me.

Long sequestered in the laps of the Himalayas, Sikkim has evolved into a favorite destination for many tourists.

Sandwiched between the kingdoms of Nepal in the west and Bhutan in the East lies this paradise- the Indian state of Sikkim.

By traveling a few hours within Sikkim one can traverse from sultry tropical to ambient temperature and then to alpine climates and from almost sea level to 1800 feet.

It is well connected to the rest of the country by rail through Siliguri in West Bengal (beyond this point travel option is by road) and by air through Bagdogra airport about 120kms from Gangtok. The primary means of commuting within the state is the road, there is no railway.

What caught my eyes immediately was its hilly roads, polite people, extremely low crime rate, Buddhism, amazing food- momos and Thukpa especially, fresh air, monasteries, snow-capped mountains, glaciers and passes, lush green tropical and temperature forests, gurgling streams…. lakes, rivers, hot springs, and waterfalls.

Our stay was 8 nights, 9 days:

Must visit is for sure Gurudongmar lake- it is simply divine, calm and peaceful and Sikkim trip won’t be complete until one visits this lake. We started early morning – 6 AM you can halt on the way around 6.30 to have breakfast which is normally bread/ maggi/coffee-tea. You will find 3 check posts within 2 hours where one can rent/buy jackets and shoes. Oxygen level at the lake is quite low around 2% or so , and we did carry oxygen cylinder with us (available at check post).

Drive is beautiful where you will see the Himalayan range and also a military base with bunkers (Being on the Tibet border). It’s truly surreal experience.

Apart from the natural beauty that one continuously beholds while in Sikkim is the scenic drive. The river that flows right across the length of Sikkim is the Tista snaking through the deep gorges taking tributaries as it goes.

Because of the altitudes that vary right from sea level to summits that touch the skies, the flora and fauna naturally cover a wide and myriad spectrum.

FYI- Yaks belong to the cattle family and can survive only at altitudes above 3000m.

Hot springs: for their medical and therapeutic value because of their high Sulphur content. One which we found is located in Yumthang.

Indian nationals do not require any permit to visit unrestricted areas in Sikkim like Gangtok, Rumtek, or Pemayanste.. However, to visit restricted areas under army control, like Changu, Nathula, and Yumthang, Indian nationals are required to obtain a restricted area permit from the Sikkim police at Gangtok. The travel agent arranges the permit within a few hours.

Tourist Information Center (03592-209090) can always be contacted for any clarifications.

For Gangtok local sightseeing- MG road (must visit), Food to try: Gundarg, Thakali thali, Momos, Sael roti, Churpi (Yak milk toffee), Shimi pickle.

In Pelling city tour, we covered- Rimbi Waterfall, Orange Garden, Khecheopalri Lake, Skywalk, Pemayangtse Monastery (Must visit)

Don’t forget to visit the Hongkong market in Siliguri if you are fond of street shopping and street food.

Enjoy planning your next trip to Sikkim!
